What I would really love to know is what did rover change / remove on the later cars ?

Someone must have all the details, or someone who breaks them etc.

But I will have a good look at an early one when I next go to the scrap yard

Pete.

I heard that quality was downed on later cars but did they remove sound proofing ? If so, where from ?

Thanks

There's quite a difference in noise that emanates from M47R's of the same age, too. Mine's very noisy on tick over, but I do hear the occasional BMW that's nearly as loud, when I'm walking around Manchester.
It's funny that you say "unless I potter around at 35 mph", because, in my car that's worst speed for obtrusive noise and vibration (a Facelift auto Tourer without a sunroof). At motorway speeds I find the noise levels quite acceptable.
