Fitting Winter Tyres - Do You Tell Your Insurers?
I was quite surprised reading this that there are 14 insurance companies that require you to notify them, if you are fitting winter tyres.

I'd imagine it's classed as a modification, due to the car not being fitted with winter tyres as standard.

I tell Peter Best when mine are first fitted and when they are removed
But no cost involved when doing so!

I didn't know that either, probably an increase in money wise too if I know insurance companies.

I wonder how far they'll go with this.
Are you obliged to inform them if you have new tyres fitted that are a different brand from those that were fitted to the car from new? Surely if the winter tyres are the correct size, speed rating etc for the car in question, I cannot see how the insurers can class them as a modification It's crackers Will they not pay out in the event of an accident, I wonder?

The full 2015-2016 list from the ABI (Association British Insurers) is here, there's fewer this year:
https://www.abi.org.uk/~/media/Files...commitment.pdf Those that do still need notifying according to the list (name and shame time): eCar Southern Rock Insurance Swiftcover Some others have caveats if you're fitting alloys or have different sizes to manufacturer's recommendations, best to check the PDF to be sure. Maybe they want to for research purposes?
If statistically cars with winter tyres are proven to have less accidents they may either start offering discounts or even insisting that they are fitted? But if they don't know how will they be able to tell if there is a difference ;-) |

Hopefully it's for the stats - I worked for DirectLine for a short amount of time, and the amount of data that's logged and collated for 'information' purposes is crazy.
The cynic in me thinks not, though...
