Take the car over to Jules, he lives in Colwyn bay, so not very far for you.

We all feel like that after a major DIY repair. Just pootle around home for a few days. Run the tests you're familiar with to satisfy yourself it's fixed. It'll be fine now I reckon.

just out of interest , is it the gasket that goes between the filter unit and engine , or the gasket between the oil cooler and filter unit that goes ??? which one is the offending article ??

Get a block test kit and test the coolant for exhaust gasses.

When you top up the coolant after a 'loss event' is there any (at all) oil sheen on the top of the coolant in the header tank?

Is the oil level always rising when a coolant loss occurs?

Exactly which gaskets have been changed?

Did you test the original oil cooler, once it was off the car?

Are you absolutely sure to be following the correct coolant fill and bleed procedure. I get the feeling that the diesel is the easiest engine to do this on, but mistakes can still be made. An air-lock in the heater matrix is easy to create. make sure the car is on level ground (from my knowledge of the system I'd suggest that if on any sort of slope then make the front the higher end) when bleeding the cooling system - and don't rush filling it.

Last question: When removing the header tank cap with a cold or nearly cold engine is there any pressure release?

It could be an inter-channel head gasket failure that simply drains coolant into the sump. I'd say you can bet yer bottom dollar it isn't the oil cooler.

Agree TC it doesn't look like an oil cooler leak - what with all the work carried out, and usually with an oil cooler leak you would expect oil in the water, not the other way around due to the pressure differentials.

Other possibilities are a crack in the head or block. Not what you want to hear though Rob.

A cold pressure test with the sump off might shed some light on it.
