I have recently been thought this with my youngest son, we ended up buying a nice Fiesta owned by an old couple from new with less than 5k on it a year and of course a few battle scars. £1400 and it came with a new MOT and a full service history.
He has had a black box fitted so it monitors his driving and he pays £70 a month instead of £200 . Don't buy anything with an engine bigger than 1200cc, plenty of low mileage cars out there and often owned by the older generation. |

Get a Micra, chain driven bullet proof engines, 1.0 16v engine, always driven by women and old ladies as they are not cool to young boy racers.
Sold loads over the years and very very reliable and cost pennies to run and buy spares. |

Agree with Sean about Micras, well built and reliable.
Also consider the Aygo/C1/107. Mrs mininuts has an Aygo, it's a really well put together little thing. 60mpg, £20 a year tax and cheap insurance. They have a 998cc three cylinder, 12 valve, VVT engine, chain driven too Relatively safe too, 4 airbags, ABS etc, etc. I think the C1s are slightly more cool with the kids and possibly that little bit cheaper. Don't know how much your daughter has to spend but here's the sort of thing http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2008-CITRO...4AAOSw8aNXG-O-

As per Westonboy above. If you want a small reliable hatch, you can't beat a Jazz. Fantastic cars.

A petrol yaris would be a good choice. Reliable and cheap to run.

Mazda 2, Micra, Toyota Corolla, yaris, Daihatsu Sirion, Toyota Starlet. All reliable, mostly driven by women, low insurance, cheap.
Avoid Ford Ka's total rust buckets. |
