I'm not sure, but I think the Princess Straight Six was the first transverse inline six car. The Volvo S80* is a more recent one.
*1998 model. Not the Ford Mondeo based S80.

Dunno who made the engine, but the engine I mean was a 3.5 v8 that was in the Rovers around the time the triumph 2000 was in production...
I'm pretty sure it wasn't a Buick thought!... ... |

It was the Buick engine. That's why the old P5&P6 are called . P5B & P5B. Just had mine rebuilt for my P6.

Yes, the Rover V8 is a Buick Engine and one of the best engines ever produced in my opinion.

Despite owning a 3500, and having owned a few V8s now, I prefer the sound of a straight six. Much more sophisticated, and I think they suit British cars better. Nothing wrong with a good V8 though.

Having owned a BGT V8 in the past, I do like the sound of a Rover V8 but my other V8 has quad cams and chucks out 320 bhp from just 3.4 Lts so a 260 V8 is a little slow but nice.
I also own a MGC GTS with a 3.0 Lt straight six with around 275 bhp but this is being increased up to 320 - 350 bhp in the future. My favorite is the six at the moment. Tom.

Take this to the limit, and a two stroke single cylinder would win hands down.
Or maybe a well sorted single rotor Wankel.! Of all engines I have had, heard and experienced, I think overall, the V8 is the best. I have driven 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8 and 12 cylinder engines. Nothing sounds better than a V8, not even a V12, to my ear. A six can be fine, and is preferred by many because they can be made to run very smoothly, take a Rover p5!, and the Germans swore by this for many years mainly because of the inherent balancing. Read any book about engine construction from Germany, and they will praise the balancing possible of a straight six. But the V8 has a short crank, it has a compact and stiff block, it can be braced and bolted through and has short cylinder heads and can be made to perform fantastically. In many ways it could be the best compromise for a larger engine.
