Default Diagnostic Tool for ABS Fault

I have an ABS fault (warning light on with engine start before moving off, plus pedal judder with gentle breaking at very low speed). My speedo and cruise control work so judging by posts on here, looks like a rear wheel problem, I guess a sensor fault as warning light is on before moving off??

I'd like to buy a diagnostic tool to establish the precise problem before buying new parts. I've borrowed two different diagnostic tools from friends but one would not connect, the other would connect but not read ABS info.

Can anyone recommend a piece of kit that will suit my R75 Contemporary 2.0 SE CDTi "54" reg?

Someone at work has suggested "Rover 75 VGATE Vs890 MAXISCAN OBD2" on eBay for £30 but I'm not sure it will read the ABS info.

Any help gratefully received.

Many Thanks,
Steve

A multimeter is all you need to diagnose the majority of ABS faults. Plenty of info if you do a search on the forum.

Hi Steve.
T4 session will tell you and save you time searching for readers which will not do the job , but my money is on the right rear bearing being at fault as you have the pedal judder, most of the ones I have seen have been that side. I cleaned and changed mine early 2016 due to back plate rust, I ended up changing the bearing.

Recently in September ABS light came on again, late Oct I found time to remove it and cleaned it on the 28th Oct, light stayed off for a day then came back on so I am waiting on a good dry day to fit another bearing & or sensor.

Hi,I had that on my launch model,it also showed up with traction control fault,as mentioned it was the offside rear bearing. In my case it still showed up faults and judder on low speed with the new bearing fitted but after I took it for a several mile run it seemed to have recalibrated itself and has not come back.Regards Ry...

Thing is Steve, although the T4 will tell you which wheel is at fault and give real time speed sensing etc, it can't determine whether the bearing or sensor is at fault when an ABS signal is lost intermittently, as can be seen from your third T4 screenshot.

A few simple checks with a voltmeter can help narrow it down to an individual component. And if you are going to do that then you might as well use the meter to identify which wheel is at fault too, unless of course you are lucky enough to own a T4 like your good self.

Thanks for all your replies. Please excuse my ignorance, but what is a "T4"?

I want to replace the rear springs soon, so will probably just replace both rear hubs/bearings and sensors while I'm at it. I sometimes think there is bit of bearing grumble from the back which could be part of the same problem.

Check out Pscan.uk, diagnostic tool specifically for Rover, MG and Landrover cars.

Hi Mike.
It will tell you if you explore more if it a line or plausibility, line is the senor & plausibility is the bearing/ magnetic ring, but yes I have to agree the made up senor kit and voltmeter will work great if you do not have a T4 I have used both I have made a couple of sets for the club for members to borrow, any member requiring it will have to get in touch with Actos.

HI Steve.
A T4 is a full diagnostic tool for our cars, we have two at our local meets, which have now sadly finished for the year, there you can get a free health check on your with the T4, link below for you to read

Nobody has mentioned TOAF yet
Have you heard of it ? In case not , it is a free download suite which was written by some Polish chaps to substitute for T4 which was generally unavailable to them . You need to be moderately competent with using software , and it is not for the faint-hearted as mistakes might be costly ! However , quite a few of us on here have reason to be pleased with it , including tracking ABS problems .
