Default Frustration at tyre shops

Does anyone else get really frustrated with tyre shops? You take an alloy wheel and they decided to put the hammer on steel wheel weights. You and ask for stick on weights they just stop and look at you like you are stupid. Throw done the hammer on ones and reluctantly put stick on weights.

Has anyone else had this?

I have had the opposite as well. Wanted the original Land Rover clip on weights on my Discovery alloys and had only stick on. I only normally go now to tyre places I personally have "Approved"

National tyre depots are only as good as their employees, and I personally wouldn't trust one of them. Longstanding independants are the way to go. I have recommended my village one to many people and they are prepared to travel a round 50+ mile trip and wait if there is a queue.
Fortunately the guy who owns it is a lot younger than me so I hope to use him till I give up driving! Btw, his prices for both tyres and batteries are certainly no more than the nationals, and often less.

Changed a tyre the other day myself, mind it wasn’t an alloy, had to drive over the tyre with other car to break the bead.

Agreed every time for almost everything, the problem is most people shop on price alone and the old thing is you get what you pay for. How many times have we heard about Halfrauds and the like making a mistake and doing little if anything to remedy it. These independents have a reputation that they need to keep and will do there utmost in most cases to keep it.

I tend to get my tyres at my local MG Dealer AE Wilcox, as they still care about the cars and what they do

Hammer on weights are quite normal on new cars straight from the factory, on lots of old corroded alloys the "alloy wheel knock on weights" (different from steel wheel versions) are the only things that stay on.

I sold balance weights for a living once. Out of my hundreds of customers there was only one who bought proper high quality coated Dionysis Hoffman (now Hoffman powerweight) individual stick on and knock on weights. All the others just wanted the cheapest rubbish they could get. The arrival of internet based sellers resulted in a tidal wave of rubbish from china.

The customer had been fairly high up in one of the motoring organisations and really knew his stuff unlike a fair sized minority of the tyre trade.

My local tyre place only use 'stick on' weights and always on the inside. They're careful that they don't hit the caliper.
