Battery housing
Do some of our models have a deeper battery box, a 096 would stick 5mm above the box on mine making putting the lid on almost impossible I would imagine. Last replaced mine in 2013, replacing a 075 with a 075 (175mm high).

The 096 (Bosch S5008) I would describe as an interference fit with the cover. It is 190mm high. For some it may be an issue if they wish to maintain originality. Personally, I fit the best battery and not worry about the fact that the cover is an interference fit.
The Exide premium EA722 096 battery is of lower height (175mm vs 190mm) but otherwise identical dimensions for those who consider the fit of the cover to be an issue. Most 100 type batteries are 175mm high. I have both the S5008 and the Exide EA722 and the height of the S5008 has never worried me.

"100" battery type
No Andrew, the boxes are the same. Originally the Lucas spec. for the 096 battery size was 190 mm tall which will prevent the box lid being fitted. The current 100 size is identical in every way to the 096 except it's 175 mm tall which, as you say, allows the lid to be fitted.
The confusion arises because some batteries now sold as 096 are 175 mm high and some are 190 mm. Choosing the 100 size eliminates this risk. Simon

Exide the manufacturer has always labelled it as a 096TE - I purchased one for my 45 Diesel about 7-8 years ago. Some sellers call it 096 Low height so I guess calling it a 100 would not be out of order given the physical size. See https://www.tayna.co.uk/car-batteries/types/096/ for even more confusion!
