At the entrance to the memorial park in Kyiv, there is a sculpture of an extremely thin girl with a very sad look holding a handful of wheat in her hands. Behind her back is the Candle of Remembrance. This monument commemorates the Holodomor.

What is the Holodomor?

After the end of the First World War, Ukraine was an independent state, but in 1919 the Soviet Union "sucked" it into the community of Soviet states. The Ukrainians considered themselves a Central European country, like Poland, and not an Eastern European country like Russia. They tried to restore Ukraine's independence.

In 1932, not wanting to lose control of Europe's main source of grain, Stalin took away the grain-producing land from the Ukrainian peasants and also all the grain, creating an artificial famine. The goal was to "teach Ukrainians to be smart" so that they would no longer oppose Moscow. The people who produced the most grain in Europe were left without a crumb of bread.

The peak of the Holodomor was in the spring of 1933. In Ukraine at that time, 17 people died of hunger every minute, more than 1,000 every hour, and almost 24,500 every day! People were literally starving to death in the streets.

Stalin settled Russians into the emptied Ukrainian villages. During the next census, there was a huge shortage of population. Therefore, the Soviet government annulled the census, destroyed the census documents, and the census takers were shot or sent to the gulag, in order to hide the truth.

Today, 28 countries around the world present the Holodomor as genocide against Ukrainians. You couldn't learn about it in school because almost all evidence was destroyed and victims were covered up for decades. To this day mass graves are being uncovered.

The Holodomor at that time broke the Ukrainian resistance, but it made the desire for Ukraine's independence from Russia eternal.

According to the Court of Appeal of Kyiv in 2010, the demographic losses due to the famine amounted to 10 million, with 3.9 million direct famine deaths, and a further 6.1 million birth deficits.

That's why the Ukrainian people won't ever give in.

Russ

Their leader is fast becoming a latter day saint. Knowing what fate awaits if ever he is taken can only serve to further the cause. That's what makes leaders into heroes.

I see some positive news is coming from the peace negotiations. Russia may be starting to feel it, hopefully it can be sorted.

Wow, I thought I was only the one who knew about this. Don't forget the Russian psyche....they love a strong man (Stalin/Putin) and that they are always anxious of invasion and/or encirclement. The fact is, only the French and Germans have done so. The British Isles have been invaded many more time than this (though it depends how invasion is defined) and yet we don't bear this cross so much.

Does the international crimes committee have any power???

They have just ordered Russia to cease their invasion of the Ukraine and to remove their armed forces back to their own country.

Is the committee just a toothless barking dog ??---

Just wondering if Russia’s negotiating position is somewhat weakened by its relatively poor showing militarily.

can tell your not Russian working with Putin

If they are doing badly then something is seriously wrong or they are not trying, as they should by now have wiped out the Ukrainian army

I think the Ukrainian army is mostly taking up defensive positions and only undertake limited local counter-attacks. I think that is the right way to go but a lot of it will be down to limited capabilities of "Home Guard" units.

It's just breaking that Russia has defaulted on a massive international commitment. Guess who is the creditor that is owed billions? It's a peoples' republic. Oops. It’s an interest payment that’s due and the creditor is one who stands no nonsense about cheques being ‘in the post’.

The amount due is the unpaid instalment of interest, note that includes no reduction of principle, and is in the region of USD $117 million. Oh, and rather sweetly, the agreement is for Dollars to be the currency. Oh, and just when you’ve lost all credibility with virtually every foreign banking resource and your national currency is worthless. That’s a shame. What poor strategy. One might have been expected to see it coming from way off.

One wonders to what extent the debtor will have to go to satisfy the creditor. Ancient eastern motto say ‘He who open front door should close back door first. And windows’.
