I see Russia’s flagship has been hit by missiles! Much as I am pleased for the Ukrainians, it’s a lesson in how vulnerable large ships are as was discussed earlier in this thread.

Whenever a Russian surface vessel deploys away from its base it takes a tug with it. Says it all really. Had a conversation once with a US navy Captain who had been aboard a Russian warship. His opinion was that they packed a heavy punch but couldn't take one because of their appalling fire control systems. |

The whole incident proves that, at least, the ammunition they had on board works.
Past tense anyway. Last edited by MarkS; 14th April 2022 at 18:31.. |

Not really. Modern warships are loaded with anti-missile missiles for medium range self-defence and gatling guns as last-ditch defences etc. What you have to realise is that Nato will have been providing co-ordinates of Russian ships to the Ukranians since the war started and the Ukranians will have launched many missiles against the Russian ships before this one. ultimately the odd one will get through. It's the same with the number of Russian aircraft and helicopters being shot down. Once the inevitable Ukranian multipliers are allowd for, it shows just how many sorties the Russians are mounting each day and many will be hitting their targets.

As fitted to RN type 45s:
Aster Missiles The Aster missile family comprises Aster 15 for short to medium range and Aster 30 for short to long range. There is an extensive commonality between the two variants, with both missiles featuring the same terminal dart. Aster’s terminal dart is a lightweight, highly manoeuvring and agile missile equipped with a high-performance active RF seeker. Thanks to the unique combination of aerodynamic control and direct thrust vector control called “PIF-PAF,” the rocket can perform high manoeuvres. Aster 30 Used for short- to long-range air defence. Aster 15 is used for short- to medium-range air defence. Aster 15 has capable of travelling over 30 km at speeds of Mach 3. Aster 30 can travel over 120 km at speeds of Mach 4 and has a maximum altitude of 65,000 ft. Upgrade planned: https://www.royalnavy.mod.uk/news-an...706-sea-ceptor However it wouldn't take much to get through all this fancy stuff and booooom. |

The Russians have never been good at anything, they steal technology from the west and remake it, badly. They got stuffed by the Finns in 1940 until they overcame them by numbers. That's all they are capable of, bullying. The Ukrainians are showing the same courage as the Finns and giving Russia a NAUGHTY WORD-NAUGHTY WORD-NAUGHTY WORD-NAUGHTY WORD-NAUGHTY WORD-NAUGHTY WORD- nose. Stand up to a bully and he will back down.
