Default Passenger inside door handle stopped working

The passenger inside door handle when pulled no longer opens the door, much to SWMBO's displeasure. The fault seemed to start when she yanked the door handle a bit harder than usual. I thought probably the cable had snapped or come adrift. Took off the little black cap, removed the single screw holding the inner door handle in place, fished out the unit and found the cable attached and the door opens perfectly when I pull the cable. If I re-assemble everything correctly like it was before, the unit fails to open the door! Is it possible for the cable to stretch in use? I'm sure if the cable was just slightly shorter it would still work fine. Advice from those in the know much appreciated. Do I need to buy a new cable or can anything be adjusted?

In truth I would have thought something would snap before the cable would stretch. Has something bent inducing slackness?
Just a thought could the cable have slipped out slightly from the hook ends?

I need to look at the other end, so the door card will have to come off now whatever I do. I can't find anything at the passenger handle location that looks wrong.
