OK folks, here's the driver's door as promised...
It must have been like that when I bought it... either way it's looking like the way in is either through the boot, or via the jacking it up and attaching a battery to the starter as suggested earlier. Argh. I'll take a good torch and some tools next time and see if I can get in via the boot. I see from the previous discussion that there are different rear seat options, but I can't remember anything about it TBH... I like old cars but I'm not a Rover expert by any long chalk. I've got the V5 here if the VIN would yield any useful information? I suppose there's always the standby of putting the rear quarter light through, but I really don't like the idea of that even though the car's future is uncertain to say the least. Thanks very much. Judging by the uneven gap between the thumb piece and the handle and the difference in the condition of the chromium plating, I'd say that the previous owner of that door (which you obtained from a scrapyard) carried out a bodged repair.
I expect that the locking mechanism is still present within the door, so it should be possible to correct this. Simon

Don't be tempted to break the rear quarter light to gain access, the lock is deadlocked !!

No don't do that follow post 6 and also maybe remove the thumb chrome piece off the door, when you swapped the door over did you not realise then that the key hole was not there? I presume not so therefore even if the original key hole is behind the cap you key is not going to open the door anyways.

Would it be possible to go in through the wheel arch access panel and give the bonnet cables a yank? That's always assuming you can reach them. I guess access may be at a premium if the wheels are dead ahead, but it may be an option.

A very good option even easier if you jack up the car and take the wheel off and once bonnet is open you can charge the battery up or connect to another battery.

As long as the locking wheel nut socket is in the accessible boot and isn't in the armrest or glovebox..............
