Swapped one of the front hubs on my newly acquired early diesel tourer. Now preparing the other side, should be fully roadworthy this week.

Default Exhausted

Strap holding the silencer failed going past a load of students. The bang and sparks on the road of the exhaust hitting the deck made quiet a few jump back from the road . So its now held up with galvanised wire while I now wait for a new bracket and back box.

Eventually finished fitting the new rear ABS sensor along with refurbed brake caliper, new discs and pads and got the old girl back on 4 wheels for first time in over a year!! However, now she wont start (or even turn over, just a click) despite a fully charged battery and 12.7v showing!! if its not one thing............!!!

Hi Gary.
First clean the the spade end on the starter motor then you most likely will need to change out the starter contacts & plunger, link below will help.

I'm still having trouble with Kim's starter motor. I've put a replacement on, which worked a couple of times, then decided to just click rather than work.
So today I went out to remove the two cables from the bottom of the starter motor, give them a rub with wet n dry, apply copper grease, then put them back on.
As I was unfastening the nut I heard a crack. Wondered what it was, but then continued. Another crack, but this time I saw sparks as the spanner touched the body of the starter motor. That was when I remembered to disconnect the battery before messing around with electrical cables
Did that, did the job, reconnected everything and tried her.
No click, no turnover. Nothing.

What fuse/relay do I need to check please?

Today after letting the new paint set up for a couple of weeks I gave the tyres a good clean and managed to remove most of the paint the incompetant clown I paid to repaint the wheels got on the tyres. (I repainted the wheels properly myself. Lesson learned!) The ZT-T looks much better with the summer tyres and nice shiny wheels on.
When putting the spare in the boot and looking for an appropriate size broomstick to hold it open I realised that there is supposed to be a gas cylinder to hold it up. I have found a suitable cylinder (from Lithuania!) but can't find the bracket that attaches to the lid of the spare tyre compartment. Does anyone know of a source before I resort to making something up?

Large mega fuse in the under bonnet fusebox.

Well after a fair bit of faffing, removal of skin from both hands, swearing etc, I eventually got the top bolt out of the starter motor, having taking just a few seconds to remove the bottom bolt. The How-to's on here are brill but my problem was that with a FBH in the way, getting a socket on that almost hidden nut is incredibly tight, my extension bars were actually too long as the FBH exhaust was in the way! Anyway, eventually got it off trying every 13mm socket I had and the motor was out around 1 min later.
The internal copper contacts were almost toast and I did wonder how the car almost always started first time. The recent just-clicking, even with a fully charged battery led to the suggestion from Arctic that it was likely to be classic worn parts problem. All back together now but as yet not returned to the car and so is untested. Fingers crossed for tomorrow and hopefully a cheap 'easy' fix!
