Refinement and silence
Hi all,
I have a MKII 2005 diesel saloon which I like a lot but I do find it rather noisy, too noisy for me. I thought these cars were quiet and refined, mine is not, unless i potter along at 35 mph. I heard that quality was downed on later cars but did they remove sound proofing ? If so, where from ? Thanks Pete. |

Hi Pete
Having owned an early Mk1 (2001) CDT and now a 2005-build facelift CDTi car, I agree that the later cars are less refined. I know that under 'Project Drive' the soundproofing under the rear parcel shelf was removed around 2002, and that inferior quality carpet with less soundproofing was introduced around this time. I also believe (but am not certain) that earlier cars had more soundproofing on the engine undertray than later cars. I plan to upgrade my car at some stage by adding back some soundproofing under the rear parcel shelf and in the boot (around the rear wheel arches). It might also be worth trying to find an early car with the thicker quality carpet (in the right colour) in a scrapyard, and swapping over the carpets, although this is not a trivial job, involving removing the front seats and centre console. I think the DMGRS on here plan to sell what they call an 'early undertray with lots of soundproofing' in the near future - perhaps Mat can provide more info, and confirm if the later cars had less soundproofing on their undertrays. Thanks for that. I did plan on having a good look at an eralier car to see what might be different. Would the undertray make the inside less refined etc.
As for an earlier version carpet, I don't think I would find one, my interior is black, did they make black interiors back then ? I thought they were all cream and sand colour. |

Early cars came with grey/black interiors too, I was going to say you should have no trouble finding a grey carpet but then I realised you'd need a LHD one..................no idea how easily available that would be

I've got a Mk1 so it's pretty quiet, but I've doubled up on the engine sound proofing and the boot carpet. Will look at the parcel shelf now

No, it's a right hand drive registered in France.

I've just gone from a pre-project drive V6 Connie SE to the same spec facelift...wish I hadn't. The refinement in NVH levels is chalk and cheese.

Just pinned another one underneath the existing one. Used the original plastic fixings, a little quieter but not dramatically
