drivers door lock (again)
Ok, I have removed the door lock actuator and am now in the process of refitting it. The problem I have is re fitting the the small bar that locates on to the lock it has at either end a "Star" cross I have read the "How to,s" but there does not appear any mention of this item when doing the lock change. Even with my smallish hands I cant see how to access it to replace it.
Can any one give me any suggestions (Polite ones only)

That cross-headed bar only sits one way in the actuator, so slot it in the actuator (I used a carefully placed little dab of silicone to help secure it in position when manoeuvring the lock into the door) and then it should just line up with the driver lock door barrel when in position - although you might need to get your hand in there to place it. It's not that bad a job.
I did this job recently and the new actuator is actually a pattern part (don't see Bosch on it anywhere) and seems to be a little bit bulkier than the OEM item, so just getting it in the door cavity is the biggest job - need to loosen the window regulator bolts to facilitate. Cheers, Karl. |

Quick addendum:
The only reason that I used a little dab of silicone to secure the cross-headed bar to the new actuator is that the newer versions don't hold the bar as tightly as the OEM ones - although the torsional rigidity (the bit that's required of this part) is more or less the same. Thanks, Karl. |

OK, Now another small problem,,All fitted back together But when locking with the Key nothing happens, in as much as you turn the key and the "cross bar" with the cross star either end doesnt turn....Both ends are located, So is there anything on the key side that may have come adrift or broken??

The cable in the actuator from the lock to the cross bar might have broken but it usually turns the bar one way but not the other.
I have seen it where the back of the lock barrel has broken away and caused a problem like that too. Russ

Yeah, that's the cross bar.
If the cross bar isn't turning when the key is turned in the handle, that would suggest there's a failure at the back of the key barrel (or the bit that holds the outer end of the cross bar - attached to the exterior handle back-plate). Might be an idea to remove the door handle and back-plate assembly, although be warned that the two screws holding the back-plate in place are very prone to shearing off when being undone I've attached a few pics of the new driver's door lock actuator in place (in case it can be of any help to others). Just a quick idea..
Did you definitely fit the cross-bar (which has two thick tabs and two narrow tabs) correctly in the actuator i.e. with the thick tabs placed in the thick apertures on the actuator? It is possible to squeeze the bar into the actuator opening the wrong way round, and I'm just wondering if you'd done this it may not be locating correctly in the exterior handle back-plate (which may not be as forgiving as the actuator). If it's this, then that's a real easy fix (hope it is ). Cheers, Karl. |
