No, water pump, cam belt with a new tensioner are the usual extra jobs undertaken with a headgasket replacement, have you given any thought as to what type of head gasket is to be fitted, most people plumb for the newer two piece gasket produced for the freelander, loads of info on here if you do a search.

Yes following on from the last post, please make sure that the full modification Kit ZUA000080 is fitted. This has 3 items :- 1 MLS Gasket (Multi Layer Steel Gasket), 1 Cylinder Head Shim ( Black side fitted face up to the Cylinder Head) and 1 Modified Oil Feed Ladder Rail. This last item is very important and must be fitted at all costs. Do not listen to anyone that tells you it is not necessary as it is a very important part of the modification. Also ensure that the Cylinder Head Dowels are of the STEEL Type and not the original Composition type use in earlier engines.
I trust the repairer is fully acquaint with this engine and knows what is required to be done to ensure a successful repair. Liner height is very important and it is also wise to rebuild the engine using a new set of Cylinder Head/Engine Bolts, as the old ones may have stretched beyond their original specification figure. If possible, do not machine the Cylinder Head face, as this has a specially hardened surface. A good clean up first to establish whether it is flat and true. However a very light skim can be okay and lead to a long term and successful repair. Skimming this Cylinder is a one off exercise and should never be repeated. Hope this is of assistance and that you have your car back on the road very soon. Oh, see if the actual cause of the failure can be established before the the rebuild takes place. Loss of Coolant, Thermostat jammed shut, Head Tank Filler Cap Leaking, Water Pump failure, split Coolant Hose or Water Pipe etc. There is always a cause, so it would be good to know exactly what caused the failure in the first place. The cam belt wasnt due the car only has 63.000 on the clock and it was changed at 47,000 i just wanted to be double sure it was correct peace of mind i guess it also had a full service at the same time plus a rocker box gasket there was no sign of HGF at this time i think the cause may have been a split in the little hose from the tee to the rad which was replaced i also replaced hose 10 because i believed there was a small leak from it but this was done before any sign of over heating and a gerry tee is in the post its also had a reversing light switch ,an air control valve and an emissions valve plus new ht leads and 2 new coil packs now the head gasket, water pump and a new set of hydrolic lifters ive only had the car a month and it had a full service history im very pleased with it on a whole most of what has been done was because i want it right and there were niggling faults the head gasket repair is being done by the local MG specialist as was all other work so yes id hope they are aware of whats needed but i will print off your comments and ask many thanks Mark

Could I suggest that you also have the idler wheel replaced at the same time as the water pump. The belt tensioner and the idler both go before the belts so make sure both these are ( have ) been replaced. |
