Handbrake problems

Hi Guys
I have just gone to the builders merchants and on arrival found that the handbrake lever button has ceased to function, the handbrake still works at the wheels but obviously won't stay on at the lever end.
Any ideas before I venture any further..

It sounds like the ratchet pawl spring has failed.
I suspect you'll have to dismantle the handbrake lever mechanism.
