Great Shame, I used to go and watch him every fortnight, when he raced for Belle Vue Aces, and he was the always the star of the race meet

RIP Ivan

Never saw him race but certainly remember him from my youth. I was into speedway big time then, couldn't help it, lived right next door to Shielfield Park in Berwick, home of Berwick Bandits. I even had a "job" selling programmes.

Sad news, Ivan was at the top of the list of the 'Greats' of speedway. I saw Ivan race at the very first speedway meeting I attended. Old Meadowbank, Edinburgh in April 1963. A Best Pairs meet, Ivan was with Newcastle Diamonds then and Mike Watkins was his 'pairs' partner.

Peter Craven of course tragically died racing at Old Meadowbank.

I used to watch the Edinburgh Monarchs at their new home at Powderhall stadium after the New Meadowbank athletic stadium was built.

I watched the likes of Les Collins, Eric Broadbelt and Geordy Hunter at Powderhall where I had a greyhound training licence and bought my own Jawa 897 two valve which I still have, and rode quite a few laps around Newport, Carmarthen and Kings Lynn on training days.

Olle Nygren used to run his training schools at Kings Lynn, he was off his head but really quite funny to listen to.

Mauger was a legend sad to see him pass away.

A sad loss of a true great of the sport, I only got to see him ride a couple of times, you knew by the aura in the pits that he was something special.

RIP Ivan, May the smell of methanol drift around that shale track in the sky for you.

I used to go and watch Newcastle diamonds ride in 78-79 before my dad made me choose between the speedway and football as he couldn't afford to send me to both.
Even though he wasn't riding for Newcastle any more he came back as part of a 4 team tournament and the place was jumping , they went crazy for him. A legend of the sport. RIP Ivan.

Lucky enough to see Ivan Mauger ride many times as I was a regular at Kings Lynn with my Dad. Total legend of the sport and owner of the gold plated speedway bike.
Rest in peace.
