Abs fault..
Hi all,
Our 75 diesel tourer is giving us a real headache at the moment... When we first got it 5 weeks ago, the wife stated the abs light would flash up for a second on the ipk screen, the Speedo would drop in speed a little and there would be a drop in power. This lasted only a second or two maybe just a little longer. Having driven the car myself, I decided this wasn't an issue I was willing to put up with at this time of year as it happened at random and could happen in quick succession and then be okay for a few miles. So.. because the Speedo was being affected, I figured the driver's side sensor was becoming faulty. I changed the sensor and found the abs would cut in all the time, when travelling at 30mph or above and then braking, it would not cut in and would bring up abs fault and the abs symbol would then remain on until the ignition was turned off. Had the wheel bearing replaced, no Speedo. (Bad bearing) Had another wheel bearing fitted, tried another sensor while I was at it.. now have the abs warning symbol come on at ignition and go out as it should. The Speedo works (flutters ever so slightly when holding a steady speed). The abs works. Only issue I now have is.. when approaching a junction or roundabout and braking and maintaining the same braking pressure once the car reaches 20mph or less, the abs begins pulsing through the pedal. No abs warning lights or issues present. Anyone able to offer any words of advice or encouragement? Had the car 5 weeks and spent 4 weeks off the road, having spent far too much money I'm quickly losing hope with this one.. Thanks Rob |

Rear wheel bearing not seeing the abs, probably caused by a rusty brake backplate.

Thanks for the fast response trikey!
Would this not flag up when putting the ignition on by the abs light remaining on? I'll have a look and check both rears this week. Thanks again |

Nope, it doesnt throw the light up, you just get pedal feedback right at the last moment when slowing down to stop.

I'll have a look into it before I start, I'm hoping it's a job that doesn't require money being spent
As for cleaning the sensor and around the sensors, what would you suggest? I'm guessing brake cleaner on a clean piece of blue roll but I'm being cautious and don't want to give myself more issues |

I had this issue last year on my Connie and as Andy says, the pedal 'crunches' just before coming to a stop. Eventually the ABS light came on and the 'crunching' stopped. The fault was due to the N/S/R wheel bearing ABS ring being damaged by corrosion on the backplate touching the bearing. I cleaned up the corrosion and replaced the bearing . I didn't need to do anything to the sensor and a quick run up the road turned off the ABS light and it's been fine ever since.

Quick update,
Following the clicking from the drivers side rear wheel while driving I've now changed the abs sensor and wheel bearing.. Still have a clicking going on and no abs fault lights and the pedal still crunches at low speeds. Had enough now to be quite honest.. Last edited by biffa75; 26th November 2021 at 13:47.. |

You need to get the wheel speeds read to find the wheel at fault. I had access to a Bosch kts. I read the speeds on an empty road on an industrial estate with the laptop on my knee. All wheels were showing 5 mph apart from my nsr which was fluctuating between 0 and 5 mph. A quick clean of the corrosion on the backplate near the stub axle and a new bearing, and it’s been perfect for a couple of years.

Thanks for the reply, I did have a friend with road on his phone, said the rear drivers side was showing a lower speed than the rest.
I still have a clicking noise from the driver's side. I'm now unsure whats going on. The Speedo also appears to flutter slightly too. The clicking appears to be coming from the drivers rear wheel but after cleaning everything up and fitting the new bearing and sensor.. I'll have to sort something but it's going to have to wait for now. Not going to drive the car the way that it is especially at this time of year. Thanks again, Rob |
