I don't know what mechanism makes them single use but apparently, they should be replaced if ever removed. Maybe it's similar to replacing certain bolts, because they have a thread lock band or are stretched.

According to the caravan 'experts' -
They are a form self locking nut. The threads are slightly crimped at one end making them slightly oval. Once fitted the threads are spread - if refitted the thread will not grip as tight.

They are reusable and are not acceptable in modern society

A FYI: a none flanged version is a 'Stover Nut', they are used to secure the exhaust manifold on a brand/model of car I won't mention here. Similar principle tho, a few threads are an interference fit due to being non-circular.
