Noisy tappets
my 1.8t has developed noisy tappets. Any ideas on the cause and cure? An oil additive has made no difference. Performance doesn't seem to be affected.

Hello Don,
The cause is contaminated oil. The cure (as Colvert says) is to change the oil more frequently. If this doesn't work, drain the oil and use Comma Flush Out according to the manufacturer's instructions. Simon

Noisy tappets
thanks all for the ideas. It is due and oil change anyway and it might also stop a bit of smoke when accelerating!

It won't affect performance - it's just a bit of lash causing the noise, because a tappet is seized and not adjusting correctly.
You can remove them and tap them on a plank of wood to pop the little piston out - if they're seized solid they may need replacing (but they're cheap enough - we have them).

No, but you will have to take the cams out.

Don,
Please have another look at posts 2 and 3. All that is required for hydraulic tappet noise is one (or two in severe cases) applications of Comma Flush Out flushing oil. I've used it with 100 % success on several occasions and on my Rover V8 I didn't have to renew a single tappet over 170,000 miles. You don't need to take your engine to pieces and you don't need to buy new parts. Simon
