Suspect the Dimbleby history won over the Paxman insouciance. They would not stand for Paxman's indifference to majesty and the possibility of embedded BBC stalwarts taking offence. See earlier Licence pressures dominating.
I hear Charles Moore is being suggested as the new Chairman (as opposed to DG) early next hear so there may be some changes in the mix re QT's left-handedness - not to mention the FB debacle. He is 100% gentleman but, in the nicest way, vicious with it.
