Just disconnect the two pipes to the oil cooler and join them together.
Is the cooling fan working as it should and any knowledge of a thermostat change?

Not rare at all, I've had 2 go, the second from 3 failing thermostats or rather the sub standard O rings that were used on it.

Bypassing the oil cooler really is an easy job, did the mechanic not offer to do this for you?

However, if you'd have had a puncture you would have been told that it was the head gasket, really boils my ****.

At this very late hour your best bet might be to hire a car so your weekend is not totally ruined.

Hi Paul,

What do you mean by "gone faulty"? The oil cooler can give trouble in two ways:
  1. Mixing of oil and coolant resulting in mayonnaise and an incorrect diagnosis of head gasket failure.
  2. Blockage of the coolant duct by K-seal.
When the engine overheats, what is the temperature reading on the instrument pack diagnostic display? Is the cooling fan running continuously at high speed? Is any coolant ejected from the expansion tank cap?

Simon
