Default engine management light

Hi all. Two weeks after passing his MOT my ZT has decided to illuminate his engine warning light. It came on this morning as I was driving to work. The car drives normally and all the handbook suggests is to take it in to the garage. Have any of you had similar problems? Any advice.would be much appreciated.

Hi,

Firstly , disconnect the low pressure sensor plug (on the fuel filter)

Look closely at the contacts cleanness ...contact cleaner and refitting

costs nothing and often solves the issue

Agree first port of call for a diesel Mike, but the OP has a 1.8T.

In my experience, this is typically a catalyst issue. A cheap code reader will shed some light and probably allow you to reset it.

The Autel AL7519 is good value. Works for me and my Lexus but NOT ALL Rover codes (What code reader does?). if it flags up some queries Rover is not listed but BMW is and it helps.

MIL light could be MAF sensor or Lamba for starters.
One simple job use injector cleaner in the fuel and run the car hard, that sometime clears the tubes
At least with a code reader you can turn off the lights if only temporary!

Though not on a Rover, I had this issue on my old Skoda. The garage didn't seem to know why or be able to do much about it. The longer it went on with the car driving normally, the less it seemed worth the possibility of being advised an expensive repair was required, so it got left for 1000s of miles and never really caused a problem. Not advising that this is the best approach to take but that was my experience.

Thanks everyone. My father in law is going to look into a code reader for me and I'm going to try some injector cleaner at some point. Can't do any harm now can it?
