Get yourself a pair of piston removal pliers, clamp on to the inside of the piston , pull the piston out.
Handy if you want to reuse the piston.

Thanks chaps - I'll look at this later.

I've got new pistons btw, so it doesn't matter if the old ones get damaged - as long as the caliper bores remain unscathed.

When i bought a pair of used calipers from online for renovation, I used a stilson grip (i think thats what they are called, used for plumbing) to gently rotate the pistons at first before slowly easing them out. Didnt really care about damage to the piston as i had bought new ones in a kit but they came out with no issue.

Great labour saving device Ron.--

But would the cost be against it or no ???

Sometimes the increased cost is well worth it though. I favour the less effort route.---

by the time you pay for pistons and seals, and pay to have them sandblasted, there would not be much in the way of cost. At least with the non 190 versions.

I did it myself, because I was doing the 190 conversion and bought a pair to refurb at my leisure. It was only after buying the seals and pistons, I found them for £140 for the pair (no mention of them being refurbished, so assume them to be new - listed for a BMW via BrakesInt on eBay). At the time, there were standard non 190 ones for £100 for a pair. The pistons and seals were I think £36 for the pair, £5 for a pair of stainless bleed nipples, and £6 for new pad clips, and I imagine around £40-50 for sandblasting, it brings it up close enough to have to decide.

Personally speaking, I have never done it before, and now I have learned a new skill. Since I have always wanted repair/replace brakes and suspension, I can now say I have (thanks to this forum) confidence to work on them.

Mine are for solid discs - Rimmers price is over £300. I hunted online and found some Pagid ones for around half that (ECP). Cost of refurbing myself is £34 for pistons & seals, £12 for slider pins and £8 for springs - total £54, plus whatever 2 new bleed nipples are. I'm de-rusting myself rather than having them sandblasted. The carriers are already done and they look just the same as they would after sandblasting.

I stuck some wood in to get the pistons halfway out with the brake pedal then I disconnected the hoses (almost zero leakage with those brass end caps ). As David said, a screwdriver will get the pistons the rest of the way out - it just takes patience. I grabbed hold of them first with some plumbing grips and revolved them.

I forgot to say, my calipers (the factory ones) are stamped 'Ate'.

Ate have been around since 1906 - http://www.ate-brakes.com/the-company/ate-history/
