Default Quick question about headlight washers

How do they work?

Do they work when you wash the windscreen
When the lights are on and you wash the windscreen
Or some other way

.....and there must be enough water in the bottle. as soon as the low level light comes on, headlamp wash is disabled

Is it just every 5th wash if you have the lights on (ie the car remembers how many times you've washed your windscreen and once it's 5 or more it does the lights then resets the counter), or do you have to wash them 5 times in a row with the lights on every time?

I found on mine (retrofitted) that yes every 5 screen washes the headlights wash but if you turn off the lights the first time you screen wash when the lights are turned back on the headlight washes as well.
