Default Noise from new clutch ??

Hi guys,
Not been on hear for a long, long time, due to health problems, so please forgive me for returning, and having to ask for advice on my car.

My problem first started some 6 months ago when I bought a new clutch assembly from a trader on here and had it fitted at his recommended garage. on picking up the car I noticed a "whirring" sound whenever I depressed the clutch, which seems to be getting progressively worse. when I contacted the seller, I was told that the clutch needed to "bed in" ????
I returned the car (5,021) miles later to the garage that fitted it.
After a very short test drive I was told I now needed a decent second hand gearbox to resolve the problem? even tho the car drives perfectly ok in all gears.
A local garage was sought for a second opinion, and he informed me it was the "thrust release bearing" which they could not source, so they recommended a complete new clutch assembly??
I then informed the original garage who told me this bearing was in the gearbox? hence the need for another gearbox, and the problem was nothing to do with the new clutch?? I'm now at my wits end as I can't afford to fork out another £500+ to sort this problem out.
Can anyone please help me to resolve this matter, which garage is right in their diagnosis??
Sorry for such a long post!

So only the clutch was changed and not the slave cylinder within the bell housing?

From your description it sounds like you slave has gone. If this was replaced with the clutch I'd get the garage to replace it as its failed prematurely.

Well as I said if it was only done 6 months and 5000 miles ago I would be having words with both the supplier and the fitting garage.

I had much the same problem a number of years ago after spending hundreds getting a clutch and slave fitted. Had to fight to get my money back.

Was it the metal tazu slave? These had a bad batch where there was no grease in the bearing.

Which is why you could be getting the noise.

Guess you need to talk to your supplier to sort out some kind of refund and some how sort out the costs of removing and replacing your faulty slave.

I'm chatting to Dave about this one at the moment - the reason we're looking towards the gearbox is that there was no oil in it (at all - completely dry bar about an egg cup full) when it was removed to change the clutch components.

As far as I'm aware, the batch of Slave Cylinders we have isn't affected by the grease issue - we checked this with our supplier.

If the issue is the Slave Cylinder, I'll of course be covering the parts and labour.
At the moment we're leaving towards taking it all apart, checking everything - and replacing as necessary.

Don't worry - it's all in hand, and I'll make sure you're not out of pocket whatever happens.
Currently waiting for a low mileage gearbox to be delivered to us - then we'll have it on hand for when we do the work.

Mat

I have a metal slave on my car that I bought from you, and the release bearing is noisy after 10,000 miles. I will probably replace it eventually, but not with another metal slave - I'll be going back to an original factory spec AP/Delphi slave - these were usually good for 100,000 miles, and you do not get the noise transmission/harshness issues on the diesel that arise when fitting the all-metal Tazu slave/master cylinders. Have you thought about offering AP/Deplhi slaves as an option with your B&B clutch kits ?

Cheers

Pete

Nice one Mat. Once again showing what good service yourself and the other traders on here can provide.

Hmmm....another thread with a gearbox running dry. I suppose I'd better check mine.

EastPete, I actually have one factory original Delphi Slave Cylinder here. It's yours if you want it, free of charge.

Daveluck, definitely worth a check! Gearbox seals tend to weep a little with age, and it's often so little at a time that it isn't noticed.
