For example, short journeys result in increased engine wear and reduce battery life. This is why taxis cover huge mileages with no serious problems. Mechanical devices which are used frequently don't have the chance to rust and electrical connections remain conductive.

A high mileage car that has been cared for and well maintained will be a better buy than a low mileage car which has been neglected so judge the car as a whole without any pre-conceptions. The hardest thing about buying a second-hand car is stopping your heart ruling your head!

PS On fuel bills, if your journeys are long and cross-country, the V6 will return at least 30 mpg. I know that's nothing like the diesel's record, but maybe not as low as you were expecting.

This so true, especially in relation to a diesel. Personally, I would never buy a diesel that has covered an average of less than 6k miles each year. In my opinion, 6k to 10k miles each year would be ideal mileage on a diesel purchase.

In addition to what the others have said, I would say that a 15+ year old car is only worth buying if a) it has a solid maintenance/repair record and condition to match or b) you are intending to keep it long term as in the latter case expenditure to bring it up top scratch would be justified. Either scenario should ensure reliability.

There is a Cowley built 75 2.5 with what looks like pretty much every conceivable extra on it listed on ebay which is not too far from me.

Very tempting indeed but my head says hold out for the diesel.

I just love all the little touches the 75 had in the early years. It really makes the car for me.

I repair 75s and zt’s, I do get the odd one to sell now and again, if you find something local I’d be happy to plug T4 in and give it a look over for you.

Longbridge early cars, are the best buy, X/Y/51 plates these had all the goodies and no cuts really and Longbridge much better built. Rust has only ever been seen on Oxford cars

Now there’s an offer you can not turn down. If Trikey passes it, you know it’s ok.

I'll have the towbar if you do.
