Prevention is better than cure, add a plate before it get to the point of tearing out, had this happen on my first Tourer lesson learnt. in your case it is a bit to late like my first Tourer, anyone wanting prevention plates at our next Nano meet please come and see me.

You could argue that it's a good design because the fixture fails towards the end of the car's expected life when many other areas are also failing.

It is definitely a design fault as the plate which holds the nut inside the panel is only spot welded, which in turn flexes at that point it, the flexing then weakens that part/area, it does not only fail towards the cars life span as these have failed on cars that are only 3-5 years old, in my opinion I would say it depends on how many times the tail gate is used over a time. A car that as most likely never had the car tail opened very much would not have the same strain as one that was opened every lets say to take out a kids buggy, remove items from the boot maybe a sales person whom as to remove sample of items numerous times day. When the part does fail it does with out warning it does not gradually fail so you can see the crack it fails with quite a load twang, in my case the gas strut shot up and over the rear roof scratch a deep line on the roof which also had to be repaired. You can see from the photo below that the Tourer I have now as had the same problem when I don't know but only one side had been repaired and not that good either so something that will need addressing in the near future.

My tourer is going in for welding next week as my strut mounts are starting to go as reported here: https://the75andztclub.co.uk/forum/s...d.php?t=295745.
Is there any chance I could obtain a pair of those strengthening plates? I'm going to get some reinforcement welded in on the existing mounts and also where its started to crack the body. I was going to get a strip of metal welded on as well but based on the above posts, won't do that now. |

I doubt the plates I have are going to help you? looking at the link above your section on the side panel as been compromised already, I have already had several members/owners whom attend the Nano meets contact about the plates, I did have some more in a box in the shed which I need to search out if I find them I will let you know asap. PS I do not know how I came by these plates, with investigation I have found these links below. https://www.electricpoint.com/pemsa-...n-clamp-m.html https://www.pemsa-rejiband.com/catal...n/206/67020046 http://www.cmwltd.co.uk/basket-tray-...-plate-p-14575

Hi Artic
Those prevention plates look good. Do you have any dimensions or part no. For them, as I would be interested in a set. Thanks Chris Sorry, just seen the links
