Default Kv6 cambelt advice

Hi all,

Some may have seen the post I made in the tech section in regards to doing the cambelt on my 75 V6.

I've been greatly informed with a great tutorial guide and have spent a fair amount of time looking into what is required and aren't put off.

The question I have is I'm lead to believe the aftermarket water pumps can leak and be a source of problems. I've also read a great deal of threads where people havent changed the water pump and continue to use the original rover water pump. (This goes against what I'd say was the norm as with the work that is involved in any car, the new belt and tensioner etc putting the already used/worn water pump under slightly more pressure and such is a false economy "not" to change the water pump.

So what's the way forward? Change the pump? If so could some one kindly point me in the direction of a good brand of pump or oem?

Also has anyone come across or used this engine locking kit?

Thanks in advance
Rob

I had a problem some years ago with a non-MGR water pump leaking shortly after installation, but the problem appeared to emanate not from the pump itself, but from the non-MGR sealing gasket. When compared afterwards with an MGR one, it appeared thinner and less "squidgy" so I would recommend at least trying to use a genuine MGR gasket.

Thanks for the info, tracker.
I've just been searching eBay and Rimmer's and found you can still buy genuine mg rover water pumps. Are these "really" the genuine rover items or just boxed up items to look original?

Tia!

I fitted a new pump, it leaked about 6 month later. If I did the job again, I’d still fit a new one. I’d just make sure the location on the block was as clean as possible and probably apply some sealant.

That is extremely cheap Makes you wonder what it is made of ?
Compare with this known make ,which in this offer is a very cheap price for Sealy ….

Still , if it lasts for one use before bending , it will have been worth it

E-Car Parts Ltd. in Sandy, Bedfordshire (eBay "ecp2004", www.mgroverparts.eu) are X-Part agents so can supply branded MG Rover parts.
ZUA 001550 is a kit comprising the timing belts and a water pump by BGA. You might have to buy the pulleys separately. If so:
LHB 101630 = tensioner pulley
LHB 100110 = idler pulley
* This parts information obtained from this forum.

I haven't Rob but I share Chris' doubt. Its retail price is £55 including delivery! Out of that price has to come the manufacturer's profit, the retailer's profit and the cost of delivery. How much is going to remain to be invested in the actual manufacture of the tools?

Also, although the item location is stated as Leicester at the very bottom of the listing the seller's address is actually in China.

It occurs to me that if you're prepared to pay for a genuine MGR water pump then why are you considering the cheapest possible tooling?

Simon
