Martin, you can use this calculator to work out various rolling radii and how it will affect your speedo. But, of course, you still have to check on steering lock as well.

The Crown wheels fitted to early 75's had tyres 205x65xR15 they were invarably Continental tyres and they gave the best ride.

The 16" Unions were fitted with 215x55xR16 tyres again usually Continental tyres.

Continental tyres give a good and quite ride but are expensive..

the highest profile readily available would probably be something like 225/70/17, but you wouldnt ever put this size on.
if i were you, i would personally put 225/50/17 tyres on. this will give a slightly better ride, but you may find these are slightly more expensive. in terms of the tyre, this size is a compromise
the 15" have a rolling radius of 203.42
the 16" have a rolling radius of 201.97cm
and the 17" with an aspect ratio of 50 have a rolling radius of 206.34cm

with 45 tyres on, it is 199.27 so really, 50 tyres are closer to standard 15", but likewise 45 are closer to 16". 55 tyres are too big, so the desicion is upto you

Which is good assuming that the speedo is absolutley accurate in the first place which they are not. The error I estimate is about 8% according to Road Angel it always shows the car speedo as reading faster than actual road speed.

When each car came off the line did they calibrate the speedo for each and every different tyre size? Just wondered as an afterthought.

generally its upto 10% discrepancy, but normally upto around 8% (as you say, but remember satnavs arent 100% accurate, and generally read only to a couple of %) i would have thought they would have been calibrated the same, so regardless of the wheel size. i would have also thought the speed sensing device would have been standard across the range, so calibration of each individual car would nt be required, just a few per batch?

I don't have any experience with the 195 but I'd be inclined to say 205 are better as there is more tread on the Tarmac
