Default Annoying Rattle/Buzzing from central air vents at certain rpm

Every time I reach a certain rpm the dashboard seems to emit an annoying buzzing sound from what seems to be the drivers side central air vent.. Has anyone else encountered this? It stops if I press or move the vent controls, but soon starts again! (Rover 75 Saloon 04)

It's the "wooden" plastic bit

Replace it with a metal backed PPD walnut dash, and never look back

Haha, perhaps a project for the near future 😆
I thought it was trim but didn’t know which part. It can get quite annoying after a while!

Just to verify what Brian has quoted, have a 75 cdt tourer (2003) on the fleet that I maintain. This had a plastic dash which creaked, rattled and made countless noises, the owner did everything possible to include wedging business cards all round the edges which helped, but was unsightly and drove him nuts !

A wooden PPD kit was sourced, and fitted up. Now quiet as you can get and looks so much better too !

Hope this fix works for you.

Some of the plastic one's are metal backed but later ones don't have it. I have a metal backed plastic one and have never had a rattle

Has anyone ever seen a metal backed Technical grey, or was the Mk2 stuff way too late?

Also watch out for colour matching, a few different companies made the dashes, and there are various shades of each colour. A right pain.

I compare dash pieces under torchlight for the easiest way to tell.

I have seen metal backed facelift dashs so you should be able to find one.

Here is a tip....

The dash vent control that has the cable on it... the cable can be strong enough that it can push the dash out ever so slightly to cause rattles.

I sorted mine by bending the TOP RH clip a little so the main dash piece was pulled in tighter, did the trick and been fine ever since.

funnily enough, yesterday, I laid down some neoprene strips to silence the rattles I had on my plastic dash. Mine has been painted, so I dont want to replace it with one of my replacement metal backed ones. The rattle on mine started around the middle of the central vents. This was resolved as T16 states by bending the clip. But this then introduced another rattle! That was at the upper corner near the binnacle. I believe this was due to a slight warping of the dash. So far after a short test, it seems to have worked.

I have to say though, that my rattles were not rev dependent, but rather heat dependent. Once the interior was up to a certain temp, it would begin - stands to reason really - heat expansion properties and all that.

A few years ago I did have an annoying buzz at a certain rev point. Annoyingly it was around cruising pace It is a common issue on our cars, and it sound like it comes from anywhere from the pass side airbag to the daylight sensor on top of the dash. That turned out to be the BCU and its bracket. This is mounted on the bulkhead above and behind the fuse box. Bending the bracket a little and adding a little sound deadening material on the BCU housing, cured this. So if you try the dash, and the buzzing remains, look at this.
