I ran motorbikes for about 20 years before ever getting round to cars. My job duties changed to include driving so the company put me through the test, in a BSM Corsa in the mid '90s.

Wolseley 1500 in 1968, three weeks after my 17th birthday. No lessons. Dad gave up after telling me to slow down all the time. He just sat next to me with his eyes shut! When I got back and told him that I had passed, he said that now, I would learn how to drive. The following day I was out in the O series Bedford 4 tonner.

My father was a class 1 Police traffic car driver but he refused to give friends or family lessons as he'd just end up falling out with them

First Learned to drive in my dads zephyr 6, column gear change, handbrake under the dash! then used my mums mini clubman estate, then went with professional driving school driving a Datsun 120Y.
Finally took my test in 1978 driving a MK2 Escort 1600 sport. (cool as you like back in the day). My dad bought my very first car off of a mate of his ... MK2 Cortina 1300 deluxe 2 door. |
