IFyou look at the unit its different to the Dynavin unit whitch has two card slots plus the swithces are a different shape.
looks like Simon will have a new projet on his hands.

I think you will find that it is different to the Dyna unit, another template needed to be send to Simon for him to work on!!!

Having read through this thread I think it's important to just relay my own personal experiences with many of the pieces that I ordered, because I too have had a lot of faults with my trim pieces.

I spent many hundreds of pounds purchasing walnut trim from Simon, who was an absolute pleasure to deal with, and always bent over backwards catering for my specific needs, including hand cut pieces for my mobile phone holder. In no way am I attacking Simon, and freely admit that my faulty walnut trim pieces all occurred after several years, so I never expected replacements, though I would have expected them to last longer at those prices.

I followed fitting instructions to the letter, even had my dad fit some of them as he is more careful and patient than me... But about two and a half years after fitting, first to go were the front covers for the passenger and driver electric windows. The walnut started to discolour yellow, then crack, then delaminate with the backing still glued, but the walnut raised.

Next up, the walnut piece over the interior light unit which did the same, then the pieces I had fitted to my mobile phone holder, then the rear of the armrest, then the sun visor mirrors, both of them.....I had also fitted the chrome strips around several pieces and although those were still fine, obviously I had to remove and discard those once the walnut trims had cracked or delaminated.

All of these after a couple of years, and having paid a lot of money, I was none too pleased. I took them all out of my car and then found that my dad's ones had also started to do the same in his 75. I do high mileage and use the car every day, he does low mileage. I run the climate control ice cold a lot of the year, he rarely uses climate control, I am parked in the sun a lot, dads is in the shade, my rear blind is up all year round, dad's is not..... so no pattern or reason why.

I personally did not contact Simon because I did not expect a replacement after that period of time, and I have just put it down to an expensive mistake. I am hugely disappointed and will not be purchasing walnut trim again and just wanted to let others know (as some members have already posted similar experiences here), what might happen. As stated, Simon was brilliant and I have no grudge with him nor expect replacements, just saying what my experience has been. For me, if I had known that my trim pieces would not last longer than three years, perhaps I would have bought less of them, or even considered whether it was worth it at all.

It is unfortunate that some members have had these issues but can we please remember that this is rare and the vast majority of members are more than satisfied with Simon's products and customer service, and if you do have any problems please contact Simon direct

" There seems to be some concerns regarding discolouration and delaminating of dash trims, which needs to be addressed.

I have been making this trims for 17 years and have had no problems in more than 99% of orders and have had repeat orders from many customers including members of your club.

Trims can delaminate

1) if they are pulled away from the part that they have been stuck to usually when fitting them. This damages the trim and delaminating occurs
2) if someone unintentionally picks at the trim with their fingernails
3) excessive heat, which is the main reason for delaminating, either through weather temperature as commented by members Phenonix and Forestgreen or overheating when fitting the trim. The fitting instructions quite clearly states "DO NOT OVERHEAT". It should be just warm to the touch.

The trim is made from 3 layers, (1) a woodgrain polyester laminate, (2) a specific automotive adhesive tape underneath and (3) a resin on the top of the woodgrain and when heated each part will Stretch and shrink at different rates.

In the case of high temperatures inside the car in heatwaves, where trims are already fitted, the resin will heat up and stretch, but the woodgrain and adhesive doesn't stretch as they are "fixed" to the dash part. When the car interior is then cooled quickly the resin shrinks and can result in the resin pulling away from the woodgrain.

In the case of overheating when fitting the trim the resin becomes very soft and stretches at a much higher rate than the woodgrain and adhesive, if left like this to cool down all the parts would shrink back 100%, but if the trim is adhered to the dash part when overheated, then as it cools down, the resin cannot shrink fully as the woodgrain and adhesive tape are "Fixed" and it is then in a state of tension, and over a long period of time one day it "Snaps" and the bond between the resin and the woodgrain breaks and it delaminates. Also the resin would be slightly discoloured as if it had aged.

If the trim is overheated at the fitting stage this will predetermine damage which can occur at anytime - one month, one year or 3 years it is impossible for anyone to say

Discoloration of the Resin

This is probably due to air pollution outside, which is constantly coming through the air vents and directly on to the chrome panels especially if you travel near or park your car in a highly polluted area. It is impossible to know to what degree a car has been exposed to any pollutant, so this would not be covered by the warranty.

I do give a one year warranty for faulty or damaged goods which I think is very fair. I cannot replace trims free of charge outside the warranty period. I am not a multi million pound Company, but I try to give all my customers a good product, good service and treat them as fairly as I can, but it seems you can’t please everybody.

Given that heat does change the characteristics of this product in its application, I would take the precaution of using a windscreen shade to protect it from the effects of the sun and light. Hopefully this would extend its life. As you know I live for part of the year in Kenya and South Africa where the temps can get up to 50C out in the bush. To protect the interior of the car, we cover up as much as possible using towels and shades. I have seen some of the local cabbies put carpet on their dashboards

I still think it's very, very expensive for that level of quality...

I found a digital printing studio who will make me glossy and matte wrap for window switches and they will give me 7 years (yes, SEVEN) warranty for ANY defects, no questions asked. Price quotation = no more than 20 pounds for all four !!!
