In later petrol engines - late 2001 the fuel filter is known to separate leading to non starts and stalling -the solution is a clip on the filter housing - originally orange in colour and known as the Fabled Orange Clip or FOC from your symptoms not sure that will be the cause but as T Cut suggests if not already fitted get one done.

yeah I remember now from when i had my last 1.8 the fuel pump was changed just before i bought the car so its not very old. but it won't hurt to check it.
I think its pointing to a turbo issue so when ive got some spare cash i.ll buy a boost solenoid, spent to much dosh on a bike im restoring
