When jacked up on both sides and turning the road wheels from lock to lock they move smoothly, with no twangs or sticking points. They are only about 1 year old as I fitted them last summer to brand new struts and springs.

On closer examination of my road spring on the drivers side, there is a small indent in the paint caused by the tyre protector making contact with it presumably while braking and the nose dips down. I am now wondering if this has been causing the knock which only happens when slowing down.

I have removed the tyre protector, and slightly repositioned it to ensure clearance with the spring all around the bottom loop. I have also noticed that the spring isolator on the bottom was flapping loose in that area, so i have refitted it, and fixed it on securely with a tie wrap.

Only been for a short run, but no knock so far.

Mine had a squeak when I fitted protectors, took them off, squeak went away, put them back squeak returned and so on. I never found the actual cause, but decided to fit and try to forget. They have been on now a few years and the noise eventually stopped.

Fix a poor handbrake; DIY ABS diagnostic unit; Loan of the spanner needed to change the CDT belts; free OBD diagnostics +MAF; Correct Bosch MAF cheap; DVB-T install in an ex-hi-line system; DD install with a HK amp; FBH servicing.

I've taken a vow of poverty. To annoy me, send money.

Hi.
I think the isolators are often forgotten about, I have a knock that irritates me no end, new top mounts were fitted last week along with bearings (the job was messed up though by a garage) and the knock went for a few days, back again so it must be the top isolators.

Fitting the protector is fairly foolproof as there are just 2 screws to line up with 2 holes, but for some reason i had more clearance on one side of the car than the other. The little shiny line through the paint of the spring shows that it had been making contact as certain times, so i am hoping that by refitting the spring isolator and securing it with ties, it will ensure at least if there is any further contact it wont make a noise.

You may have had a squeak for the same reason, but in your case it was probably the isolator squeaking against the inside of the protector cup which stopped once they bedded in to each other.
