My favoured oil is Duckhams, it used to make my K4 Rovers sound like electric motors. The few times I have used Castrol Magnatec as it has been in the bulk tanks at work it has made the engine knock on start up from cold and made the engine rattle at light throttle when hot.
In the KV6 I have now, shortly after I bought it I went to work to do an oil change with my new oil filter. I drained the oil and went to buy some duckhams from the garage next door. Eyebrows raisedly they had stopped selling it so I had to use the Castrol out of the tank. I immediately noticed the initial roar after starting had stopped and was replaced by a chugging rattling. As soon as I get a chance, Duckhams will be back in there.

Seems a bit harsh Phil.
Although my ZT is low kms. (28000) I have had no ill effects or strange noises start up or otherwise from using Magnatec in my KV6. regards Barry |

Sorry, I don't mean to come across as slating Castrol. They are just my findings in my experience with using it in my Rover engined cars. I find it fine in Honda cars and others with manually adjustable valve clearances.

If you change from a semi synthetic to fully synthetic oil it is possible that the fully synthetic oil can actually dislodge some of the bits and actually make the seals less secure. This is mainly relevant on older higher mileage cars. I have heard a few horror stories from users of higher mileage cars that when they put in fully synthetic oil they had leakages that were not visible before and it resulted in engine issues. If you have a low mileage car that has always had good quality oil in and has been regularity serviced then the risk will be less. However why change from what the manufacture recommended for your engine? Rover stated 10W40 so that’s what I would use. We know that Rovers are very specific on what fluids they like and don't like. Take the auto box's. If you use the wrong oil in them they will be screwed sooner rather than later and will not run as smoothly. The wrong coolants can cause corrosion and may be a contributing factor to HG failures. Another reason for going fully synthetic is for longer change intervals. However I would think this is dependant on how you drive, where you drive and again how regularity you change the oil. I do mainly town driving so I change the oil and filter every 6 months or 7500 miles whatever is lower. If you were driving on long motorway trips then the distance between oil changes can be far greater as the oil will be kept at a working temperature for longer periods and actually age less.

Also don't think I'm stating Mobil 1 is no good.
It's just I don't see the point in spending double the money if you change the oil regularity and if you don't change the oil regularity then you don't care about the car enough to warrant spending the extra on the oil.

i normally change the oil every 6 months and will use the mobil s 10/40 as recommended....
also just got the ZT last month...had the cambelt change done now onto to the oil and service..... Thanks for all the advice.... |

My ZT is coming up to 60000miles.
Should I have the gearbox oil changed and if so what type should I get? Money isn't a problem Also what oil should it have in... its always had MG X-Power oil from Clemo in it... think it was 15/40 semi synthetic but not sure. What is the best? |
