Angry Windscreen Replacement

Bad day, while putting interior back onto car after drying carpet out I knocked the rear view mirror with seat. Heard a load crack and to my dismay noticed it had cracked the windscreen.

Gutted as the car is sorn with no insurance or MOT, what cost effective options are available to sort my error out.

When I replaced the one on my tourer through insurance autoglass invoiced the insurance company £700. I can find screens on ebay for £88, will one fit in a tourer for transport?

Does anyone know how much independants charge for labour, rough ballpark figure?

Becareful with a secondhand front screen, the slightest chip on an edge when removed will cause it to crack.

Best bet, get on the yellow pages on line, and try a local independent company, not the big insurance ones.

I got a brand new one with rain sensor for well under £200 + fitting.

Thanks for advice. Local independent supplying and fitting for 95 quid tomorrow. A bit less than the 700 charged to insurance company last year by autoglass. Guess thats how they pay for TV commercials.

That sounds scandalous 700 quid for a screen that an independent can do for 95 quid
That sort of mark up adds to OUR insurance premiums no doubt

Windscreen replaced yesterday, all good. Bloke that did it said it would take 30 to 40 mins. Took him close on 2 hours in the snow, said the temp makes the bond harder to cut out. All set for MOT Saturday morning now the airbag light is also sorted

I know this is an old thread, but would welcome up to date advice on which outfits to askm and also what to ask for as I know there are some thin or otherwise suspect screen being imported and supplied by some fitters.

I'm in Leeds (Yorkshire)

Had mine done a few weeks back by Autoglass, they supplied a Pilkington glass screen, no ripples or defects in it as far as I can see.
