No worries If it is too expensive, I'll have to put up with it and start saving for a replacement, it's not the end of the world

Okay, just got off the phone to Jessops in Birmingham (didn't catch his name)
I have to take the lens to them, pay a £25 deposit and they then send it off to Nikon (Johnson's?) who then quote me the repair cost, if I go ahead and have the work done the £25 is deducted from the final fee, if I decide not to have it done I lose the £25. in his experience these type of jobs usually end up being more than my particular lens is worth (to me at least) Bearing in mind that I paid £100 for it and if the cost of cleaning is more than £50 It loses value as such (I can buy a brand new one from Jessops for £150 ish (probably cheaper in other places) I'm now undecided on what to do

Sounds like the first bod didn't explain it correctly with their procedure! If it were me I think I would probably sell the lens as is and pick yourself up a new one complete with manufacturers guarantee. Let us know how you get on

It's looking likely that I'll do just that Jeff, trouble is do I be economical with the truth regarding the speck of dust or do I tell it like it is and hope that someone buys it anyway? either way I can't use it as it is, because I 'know' it's there and it bugs me so I use my 18-55mm kit lens instead, might just stick it on the bay at 99p starting price and hope for the best, good idea? or a very bad one?

List it as it is warts and all, then the buyers can decide if it's worth a punt. Kenny |

But then as you know the flaw is there and no longer use it then in effect it is worth *** all to you. Therefore however much you get is a bonus !! Still as you say.......****** annoying. On the plus side think of the nice new shiny lens you will get to replace it I know money is tight these days but if you can get a higher quality lens, it will pay off in your pics. Nikon is not the cheapest but some of the independents are very good for the cost. Try looking at reviews on the What camera website. All the best Kenny |

I agree with what Kenny says,
If you don't mind a zoom instead of a prime my last lens I bought was the Sigma 18-35 1.8, it's a cracker and made for APS sensors Here's a photo I took today at the rescue, straight off the card with no editing....

Thanks Jeff, just had a quick look at that Sigma, after I picked myself up off the floor, I re read the prices, yep it really did say £500 Unfortunately those sort of lenses and prices will have to remain in dream-land for me I'm only ever going to be able to buy non-professional consumer kit and to be honest even a lot of them are way out of my reach.
B E A Utiful : I can't get those sort of pics, wish I could
