It's the only explanation for the low running temperature. Unrestricted coolant flow keeps the engine too cool. The stat moderates the flow to the radiator. This maintains the normal running temperature near 90C. It's unusual for a V6 stat to 'fail open' in the usual way of things. It would be interesting to see it if you can ask the garage to save it for you.

Im going to run the obd temp thing again on the way home from work later... as it used to always go to the 9 o'clock position after a few mins of driving, now it fluctuates up and down depending on speed a lot of the time

Maybe worth checking for air in the cooling system before spending money. If a bubble is circulating around the head it can cause a false temperature drop on the gauge. Perhaps a good bleed will help matters?

This problem also scared me when driving my new purchase home last year as low or zero temp reading can also mean NO water. Have concluded it's the stat failed open, and as it's currently a spare virtually unused car I'm not bothered about it yet.

Is yours also the v6?

I done the obd reading it does get upto 90-94 but only when sitying in traffic and takes ages on a drive. When i pull off tho it quickly drops down to 70s and occasional low 80s
Cheers
