Default Is it safe to connect my car battery charger into the cigar lighter socket ?

Hi,
Is it safe to connect my car battery charger into the cigar lighter socket ?
(It's output is about 5 to 10 amps max)

NB: Please see my earlier post: Help: Locking Wheel Bolt Removal

Eg: My Cars battery is flat:
But I can't open the bonnet, and I need to open the boot (estate) to see if I have the adaptor that you need to use to remove the 'Locking Wheel Bolts'

Thanks.

Only if the charger is specifically designed to be connected this way (i.e. comes with a lighter socket adaptor) - I'd suspect that 5A is the fuse rating for the socket so maybe not - unless you can set the charger to a lower maximum current.

As above, I would not like to chance a heavy current charger as the wire to the cigarette lighter are quite thin.

If you charger has an overnight / trickle charge option that should be ok though.

The cigarette lighter only live when you turn the key to position 1 or ignition on. I guess it will not charge the battery except you left the key in.

I believe that this is indeed the case.

Mac; your profile gives no details of your car whatsoever. Are you asking about a 75/ZT or something completely different? If a 75/ZT, please enter the model details and year into your profile so that we can give the correct reply.

The change was part of Project Drive, from 15-1-03, VIN 279844, the cigar lighter was no longer ignition controlled.

Mine is live all the time face lift model. Use it for a solar panel charger.

This must be the only positive "project drive" change.

My Haynes manual shows the cigar-relay-coil is fed via F11 @ 5amp,
but its contact (which feeds the cigar-socket) is via F15 @ 15 amp.
