Default Steering Pump 2.5v6 problems

2.5 Conn Auto v6 'Y' plate, 55k miles. Got it last Nov, done 5.5k since. Last week pump was intermittentley noisy, checked fluid level, same as when bought. However my mistake, read the level wrong, also noticed some froth, so topped it up (possibly slight overfill). Noise seemed to stop. Lent car to son in law today, no probs till he picked me up. Tight rh turning around, pump again noisy. Smelt fluid, when I checked level it was ok but frothy. Some oil had come out of breather hole in cap, has gone down to belts below. My theory? Original oil level low, so air in system causes froth. When topped up oil picks up ok, until used on full lock. Higher level + air causes oil to froth out of breather hole. Oil on belt also causes some slip. Any thoughts on this? I suspect it needs bleeding but unsure of procedure - turn to full lock both ways? and can I clean the belts?
