Just to close this out, here is a pic of the rear of my cluster:



As you can see the far clip is almost completely closed while the near one is fully expanded, this is the one that would not release.
Had I seen Rick's tool, I would have made one and not had the problems I had.

By tilting the cluster back at the top I was able to open a couple of mm gap at the bottom and the tool slipped right in. The cluster was out in seconds after that.
I must be lucky. I took mine out today to change the sounder. Taking the cluster out was trouble free, my difficulty was disassembling the cluster to get the old sounder out. I couldn't release the black socket.
