PCV valve / filter - help please.
My second attempt to do this relatively "easy" job .... went out this morning and purchased what I thought was the final part of the jigsaw, a 5mm socket.
Anyway, when going to remove what should have been 3 * 5mm screws holding down the wiring rail, one I found missing entirely and 2 are what appear to be rivets (please see the photos attached). Anybody else have a similar instance? Just wondering whether I should be getting the pilars on these or should I be levering them with a screwdriver? Any help gratefully received.... as you can probably tell, I'm a bit of a novice when it comes to car mechanics. And just to kick a guy when he's down, Spurs have just lost with the last kick of the game. At this rate I'll be glad to get back to work! |

Get a 5 mm socket on what you say are rivets and release, them, I then just pulled back the rail far enough to get the PVC thingy out, you will need to undo 3 allen bolts I beleive. It's a tight fit but wiggle it till it's free.
I was unsure first time I did it but just ensure you don't stress anything and you will be Ok. Did you buy a new filter (about £13 quid from BMW dealer) or are you just going to clean the existing one? Stubs |

Stubs,
Did you look at the photos - there is nothing to grip on with the socket, unless I'm missing something. Andy |

I seem to remember that they are female hex fittings, so you might need to use a smaller socket if they have been rounded by using a conventional socket.
If you have done high mileage (or seeing that car is now over 5 years old) perhaps replace all the sections of return circuit tubing as once it has been disturbed, it can have catastrophic failure just at the wrong time... I remember this bit much more vividly... |

My socket fitted Ok, I had no problem removing the screws. but as stated if rounded you may need to use a locking wrench or something.
