Default In Line thermostat

Just installed one of these from DMGR. The posts showing how to do it were very good but it was a real push to get it down the top hose but all safely back together and working fine with the temp gauge where it should be at 1/4 to. Many thansk to all who have posted guidance.

HI Norman.
I am today going to fit four gates inline stats today in some spare top hoses I have ready for out September Nano meet 14th & 15th I prefer to use gates as they are reliable the only ones I have ever used over the last 9 years.

When you say the gauge is at the 1/4 on the dial it should be at the 1/2 mark 09.00. even then this does not make any difference to the true temperature of the engine, it can be anything from 75c up to 115c at that 1/2 point on the dial, if it is only 1/4 then I would say your engine is still running cool so the inline stat may not be working.

Use the OBC hold in the trip recorder button until number 1 appears then quickly press the button in & out up to number 19, once that is showing it will say off/on flashing, press the button in quick on either and then go to number 7 this will show the true temperature of your engine.

After a 5 to 10 miles run you should be looking for 87 -89 if it says 91 -92 even better, 75- 83 I would suggest the in line stat is faulty.

I had an 82 one once, which would settle on 80 degrees, oddly the two 86 degree ones both settled on 82. Currently I have a Wahler 89 degree one fitted, which settles at 87 after initially opening around 88-92 depending on the load. After around 3 or 4 years, it is still working like this.

I still maintain the variance of opening temp and specified is down to the location of the inline fitment compared with the original which was designed to operate with the location of the temp sensor.

Wahler also do a 92 degree version, but I have never seen one for less than £28, compared to the £12-14 for the 89. (I think £28+ is expensive for what is essentially a bodge, and an OEM one is not much more - which I have for when the seals fail)

try the wahler one, and only insert into the hose by pushing down on the frame of the stat, never the bulb (I did that once and am convinced I damaged it).

HI Chris.
yes your must be opening early or does it have a jiggle pin in it, if so they let water through and never get up to temperature, I took my car for it's usual run this morning before I did the usual fluid test etc.

Zero miles.
1

Cold needle point.
2

Trip held in to 19
3

Trip to stage 7 & temp reads 27.
4

Drive off then once I have reached 5.2miles temp reads 84c
5

Needle point is at 09.00 after 13 minute run.
6

Arrive back home after 12.7 miles, stat settled at 85c after opening.
7

Leave engine running temp moves up to 87c
8

88c
9

89c
10

Then to 90c
11

Finally ticking over between 91c & 92c
12

13

I leave it a while longer 93c
14

Turn engine off at 97c
15

So my car runs at 89c when fully warmed up and going down the road, with the gates inline stat.

Once fitted, I put everything back together and took the car for a 100 mile drive out to Wisbech and back to see the inlaws. Amazingly after my previous personal best at Grandad driving (50.4 MPG) I managed an overall 55.4 MPG.

The engine is now running between 84 and 89 degrees (as opposed to between 60 and 64) and finally my heater blows warm.

I couldn't be happier with the results of such a simple modification.

Two things I did notice:

1. the inlets and EGR valve are covered with about 4mm of oily crud - is that OK / normal? Should I clean the EGR valve?

Quote:
2. A narrow bore pipe leads from the front of the EGR to what I guess is whatever activates valve - the bracket that holds that gizmo has broken and it's flapping around under the ait intake duct. I guess I need to do something about that fairly quickly. I was thinking of cabletying it out of the way...

Cheers...

Simon.
Hi Simon.
The solenoid bracket is broken on most of the diesel cars I see, when i am changing over the manifold for a clean one & clean EGR, I make a bracket for it out of some steel joint bracket you can get from Aldi or any iron mongers.

Some members tie them up with string or cable tie them, photo's attached

I've fitted the inlet thermostat mod myself just the other week.

Had the usual improvements as have been mentioned above.

As to the EGR and inlet manifold, thats the first thing I noticed is how much horrible crud is in there.
What does everyone use to clean it out with? Do I soak the manifold and EGR overnight in a solution of something?
