Default Clunk when going past straight on steering

Hi all

Chaggy has a clunk when you turn the steering wheel left or right passed straight.

So you turn left a little and it clunks, same when you do it to the right.

Ok if travelling above 10mph.

Is this the strut mount bearing? If so will the below cure it?

Any how to`s on how to replace them?

The T of Zed didnt do it and was lovely and smooth.... (pre-project drive ZT)

Chaggy is a 2003 and doesnt feel aswell put together lol.

Thanks
Jub

Strut top bearing, almost certainly. Try rocking the steering back and forth, whilst someone feels each front spring. The spring will twang, in time with the bearing suddenly jumping.

To replace them, the strut needs to be removed and the spring taken off.

You just need to replace the bearing, rather than the entire mount, much cheaper at around £15 for bearing alone.

Fix a poor handbrake; DIY ABS diagnostic unit; Loan of the spanner needed to change the CDT belts; free OBD diagnostics +MAF; Correct Bosch MAF cheap; DVB-T install in an ex-hi-line system; DD install with a HK amp; FBH servicing.

I've taken a vow of poverty. To annoy me, send money.

Resurrecting this thread, my V-reg R75 2-litre has just developed the symptom stated in the opening post. It has been standing for six or seven weeks while I was abroad. Went to use it on Friday and the steering was clonking fit to bust just getting off the drive. I've parked it while researching.
Two questions:
- does the clonk, attributable to worn top bearings, manifest itself suddenly?
- it it likely to be safe (as opposed to irritating) to use the car for a week (attending a wedding in Cornwall next weekend) and about 600 miles?

Thanks for any info offered.

Derek.

Derek.
If you are certain, it is the strut top bearing, it is not a reason for an MOT fail - so no reason not to drive it.

They don't suddenly fail, but in your case perhaps the bearings rusted up with being stood for so long with moisture trapped in the bearing?

Yep I agree.

Had the same problem, since cured by new strut mounting
