Default Which make of front brake discs?

Well, this is the second set now in about 9 months. First set were EBC, second Mintex and I've only had them on for about 3 months and again getting juddering under braking. Any ideas what make is best that will at least last longer? (2003, MGZT 2.5v6)
Cheers, Stew.

They dont seem to be lasting long, are you certain the hub was really clean before the disks were fitted as it doesnt take much to make them run out slightly and warp with usage, also check you piston and calliper are moving freely and not putting one sided pressure on the disk, If a garage fitted them take the car back and insist on new disks on warranty, a friend of mine took his golf back to the garage 8 months after getting new disks fitted because of warping and he got new ones for free.

I had a nasty juddering the other day under breaking. I think it had something to do with my foot slamming the break pedal to the floor. Damned dog.

When I purchased my car a few months ago it had a bit of a judder under breaking. Especially just as the car was comming to a stop. After a while the juddering went away. I phoned the previous owner and he said that the breaks were juddering ever since he had the disks and pads changed. The aftermarket pads have taken adges to break in. (about 1500 Miles). Mow they are fine apart from the horrible squeel common with aftermarket pads.

Are you giving the disks time to bed in without heavy breaking?

Are we talking Discs here or pads? EBC /Mintex sounds like pads not Discs ?

Thumbs up

I'm probably teaching you to suck eggs here but there are three things I would suggest to make sure you do all the time.
  1. Make sure you do not remain stationary at any point with your foot on the brake pedal. Use the handbrake to keep you in place.
  2. Use the brakes less. Yes yes, easy to say it, but really concentrating on anticipating the traffic ahead can result in a lot less braking, and better fuel consumption too as you switch less from accelerate to brake to accelerate
  3. Try and get your discs cool before you complete your journey. This was suggested to me by a Mechanic relating to a Bentley Continental belonging to a Boss of mine who was also experiencing warping. He suggested adopting the same ideas as with a turbocharged car - Don't go stamping on them from cold and don't thrash them and then just stop
I follow all of the suggestions above and mine is on only her second set of discs in 135,000 miles. In fact the second set are about 90,000 miles old and still look fine, so they're not old wives tales!

OEM Rover discs only for me. Secondary market ones always seem to last less well.

Mind you I did only pay £30 to Best of British for a front set on ebay Bought them three years ago and put them into store...........now I just need a set of rears!!

A set of rear discs for the V8 is somewhere near £ 700.00 X part prices !!
although through the Twosixties club there available for just over £ 320.00 ish , crazy retail price but there specials made by lockheed ( I think )

Best to use matched discs and pads from a decent manufacturer to avoid problems with wear, braking efficiency and the possibility of overheating the discs.
The advice given by Pete above is sound, cuts down on wear and saves fuel too.

Good point. Also prevents you from annoying the driver behing by searing his retinas with your brake lights.

Another one to add is never wash your car unless the discs are cold. a cold jet of water hitting hot discs can crack and warp them.

and stay clear of EBC discs, they are made from tesco value chocolate mixed with the scrap metal the chinese wouldnt take
