Default Advice on Replacing Automatic Gear Knob

Hi there - I have bought a replacement gear knob for my 2004 Connie as the original is getting shabby with peeling leather. But it is attached to the gaiter with a sort of silver ring, unlike earlier cars Does anyone know how to disconnect this ring before I hoick the gear stick out and avoid a black eye? Photo attached

Thank you for that. Not quite - that guide shows the gear stick when it is out. I'm happy to pull it out but the handle itself seems to be secured to that silver ring underneath and I'm wary of ripping out or tearing the gaiter when I go for the big heave.
