Default Issue whilst reversing

I have a Rover 75 Diesel. Today, the engine management light came on. Car runs fine, although I thought it was missing slightly when driving down the dual carriageway. I have noticed that when I'm reversing, it feels like I have run over something small on the road on the nearside. This is the same everytime I reverse. I checked the wheel and noticed there is some play in it. I am now wondering if what I thought was a slightly missing engine might have in fact been a drive issue from the rear wheel. Before I take it to the garage, does anyone have suggestions what the issue could be? Thanks.

Hi James.
Engine management light could be the wiring on top of the fuel filter, unplug it and give it a squirt of contact cleaner, not WD40 and plug it in and out a few times see if the light stays off.

If the rear wheel feels like it as some play in it make sure the studs are tight to 125Nm if they are then take the wheel off and have a look, to see whats going on.
