New PC... good deal?
Well I think it is - bought a system to replace my prehistoric laptop (need a desktop, and anyway laptop is 750Mz Pentium 3, 500MB RAM and 20GB hard drive, with both screen hinges broken and a few dodgy keys!! Oh and runs slow at times, no surprise!!).
It's a Zoostorm (not heard of them before, Brother-in-law say he had them at work and were fine). Intel Pentium Dual Core G645 2.9GHz 8GB DDR3 RAM (can upgrade to 16GB) 500GB SATA HDD DVD RW drive ASUS motherboard Just a system, no monitor, keyboard, mouse or OS. £200. Good? I'm happy. Got a cheap keyboard and mouse for less than £12 for both and am borrowing a monitor, money is tight but I NEED a desktop and hate short term 'bodges' - hoping this system will last at least 7 years, hopefully more, I'm not a demanding computer user. I just need to get the internet to my desk (currently laptop is not on a proper desk, compounding things) so will buy some through-the-mains adapters. Will have a go at getting the system up and running tomorrow. I don't like computers so hope that once set up and settled in it'll run for years without any major tinkering etc. |

8 Gig of RAM - one presumes you're running a 64 bit version of Windows O/S(assuming it is Windows of-course)!?

Zoostorm are very good. I actually have a trade account with the company that makes them, and they are good PCs.

Thanks for the positive replies, sounds like it should all be fine then.
8GB should be enough for anything I'll be wanting to do in the next few years I hope. The main idea of getting a new system with good specs is 'futureproofing', so it lasts for ages before I need to get a new system. I'll be putting on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. I've been using 8.04 LTS since it was released and should have upgraded it April last year but needed a new hard drive so kept putting it off, as the laptop was so creaky anyway. 12.04 will be supported for 5 years so that'll do for a while! If not then I can always put on a newer version. I'll try the Unity interface, but may go for the classic Gnome desktop, which I've been using for 4 and a half years now and really like the layout. |
